Tot Lots [New]

On February 17, almost 30 citizens interested in preserving our unique system of neighborhood playlots at Mesa Public Library to organize Communtity for Playlots. The agenda for the meeting prompted much discussion of how important the playlots are to many families and how interested the citizens are in preserving these playlots.

Mission Community for Playlots is dedicated to the preservation of all neighborhood playlots in Los Alamos County.

Vision The neighborhood playlots in Los Alamos County will become and continue to be safe, serene, and welcome places where people of all ages can gather in neighborhood settings. Public and private funds will become available to maintain and enhance playlots in an ongoing annual basis consistent with the wishes of the participating neighborhood. Public and private resources will work together with common goal of preserving all neighborhood playlots.

Strategy The ongoing role of the neighborhood playlots' contribution to the health and vitality of the community will be achieved by the integration and continued support from several sectors in Los Alamos County. To achieve our vision of neighborhood playlots it is necessary for a close cooperation between the County government, neighborhoods, and concerned organizations. The close cooperation will come in the form of financial support, County resource support, and both County and citizenry human resource support. The individual neighborhood playlot priorities and level of efforts will be stated in the Los Alamos County Comprehensive Plan and the Los Alamos County Parks Department Master Plan.

Financial support will be possible by: 1) the County policy of sustaining the neighborhood playlots in a year-to-year manner consistent with available financial resources; 2) private support from identifiable individual contributions, community-service organizations, and public/private foundations. Additional funding will also be provided by neighborhood fundraising efforts to afford additional maintenance or enhancements exclusive of public and private sector funding.

County resources will be in the form of necessary supervision for the installation and validation of safe operation of any new equipment, use of heavy equipment necessary for maintenance or enhancement and, consistent routine maintenance (such as grass mowing and trash removal).

County and private citizen human resource support will be done in cooperation with neighborhood efforts in the manner of Adopt-A-Park organizations, specific playlot work parties, and necessary individual efforts to keep the playlots safe and clean. The County and community efforts will be coordinated and recorded by a County employee with necessary resources to make all funding and person efforts a part of the County public records.
